Why Remove Metadata from PDF Files

PDF metadata includes hidden fields that store information about who created the document, when it was made, and what software was used. This data travels with every PDF you share, which may not always be desirable.

You may want to strip this information before sending a resume to a job application, submitting a business proposal to a competitor, or simply archiving personal documents without leaving traces of your software environment. Remove PDF Metadata gives you a quick way to clean up to 5 files at once without installing anything.

How the Process Works

  • Drag your PDF file(s) into the upload area or click to browse your device
  • Click the Remove Metadata button to start processing
  • Wait a moment while the tool strips author, title, producer, dates, and other embedded data
  • Download each cleaned file individually or grab all results at once

What Information Gets Stripped

The tool removes standard PDF metadata fields: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and creation or modification dates. It also clears XMP metadata streams that some PDFs carry alongside the basic fields.

Your visible content—text, images, formatting, and links—stays exactly as it was. Only the invisible identifying information is removed. The document looks the same to anyone who opens it.

Privacy and File Handling

Everything happens in your browser. Your files never leave your device or get uploaded to any server. This means you can safely clean sensitive or confidential documents without worrying about external exposure.

Your original files remain untouched on your computer. The tool generates cleaned copies that you download separately.

Limits and Practical Notes

  • Accepts up to 5 PDF files per session, with a 100 MB maximum per file
  • Removing metadata does not anonymize content—if your document names people or organizations in the text, that information stays visible
  • Some PDFs store metadata inside embedded images or annotations; this tool focuses on standard metadata fields
  • Processed files are not stored anywhere after you close or refresh the page

Frequently asked questions

What does PDF metadata include?

Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer and the creation and modification dates. Some files also carry an XMP metadata stream with more.

Does removing metadata make a PDF anonymous?

It removes the identifying data, but the content itself is unchanged. If the document names you in the text, that stays exactly as it was.

Do you upload my PDF?

No. The file is read from your device and the cleaned copy is written straight back to it. There is no server in between.

Will my PDF look different after removing metadata?

No. The visible content, layout, images, and text remain identical. Only invisible metadata fields are stripped.

Can I reverse the metadata removal?

Once you download the cleaned file, it cannot be reverted to its original state. Keep a backup copy of your original if you might need it later.

Does this work on password-protected PDFs?

No. The tool requires unprotected PDF files. Unlock the document first in your PDF reader before uploading it.

What happens if I close the page before downloading?

The cleaned files exist only during your current session. Closing the page removes them, so download your results before leaving.

Can I process more than 5 files at once?

The current limit is 5 files per session. For additional files, you can run the tool again after downloading your first batch of results.
